FAQs

Some of the most commonly asked questions answered by the My Block Team.

General

What is My Block?

My Block is a curated online platform championing independent businesses & culture in Northern Ireland. It contains: a directory of independent businesses, things to do locally and curated guides to local businesses.

What does My Block mean?

The word “Block” refers to your neighbourhood. Our aim was to encourage people to support independent local businesses and get to know what’s happening in their neighbourhoods; to be proud of the diverse, talented and hard-working small business community in Northern Ireland.

Who is the team behind My Block?

My Block is a project by the team at Belfast Design Week, an annual design festival that started in November 2015.  Through Belfast Design Week and the other initiatives we have worked on, we have supported, commissioned, interviewed and showcased hundreds of creative businesses in Northern Ireland.

What makes My Block different from other platforms?

My Block features a diverse range of businesses on one platform and shares the human stories behind the businesses.

My Block’s focus is on independent businesses and its aim is to collectively boost discoverability and provide a “port-of-call” for those looking to support local businesses.

My Block offers a well designed alternative to businesses that don’t want to set up and maintain their own website.

Business

How do I know if I qualify as an “independent” business?

At MY BLOCK our focus is on small and micro local independent businesses.  We have developed our eligibility criteria in line with our values, and the ongoing challenges of small businesses in Northern Ireland and in particular following the Covid 19 pandemic. To be eligible to feature your business must be:

  • Based in Belfast, Northern Ireland (We will be expanding to the rest of NI in coming months.)
  • A privately owned business free from outside control
  • A locally owned business (registered only within Belfast Northern Ireland)
  • Full decision making function for the business is held by the local owner(s)
  • Must have no more than 4 outlets
  • Must have no more than 50 full time employees
How much does it cost to take part?

We are offering our basic directory service free of charge to all businesses. This option will always be free to ensure that we are accessible to those of all socio-economic backgrounds.

We will be offering premium listings for a small fee as well as partnership, advertising and sponsorship opportunities later this year.

Is this platform for Belfast based businesses only?

Our pilot platform launching this summer will feature businesses from Belfast. We will be expanding to other towns and cities in NI later this year.
