Fire and Fae is a unique jewellery brand, specialising in one-of-a-kind, statement pieces. We caught up with founder Kathryn McLean.

What is your role within your business?

Founder and designer

Who else works in your business and what do they do?

No other employees - it is just me!

What inspired you to set up your business?

My own love for unique jewellery and a desire to wear something different.

In your opinion, what makes your business special?

One-of-a-kind pieces that you will not find anywhere else!

Next steps - What are your hopes and dreams for your business in the future?

I would love to participate in art or fashion shows/events and collaborate with other artists.

What do you love about your local neighbourhood?

I love that there are quite a few independent businesses that are within walking distance. We are also fortunate to have some lovely green spaces nearby.

What local independent businesses do you love?

JBird bakery, Mikes Fancy Cheese, Rickydrewapiccy, Kevlar, Astrl Fibres

In your opinion, what has been the biggest highlight of running a business in Belfast?

Connecting with other people who are running or starting up new, independent businesses

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of your business?

I love travel, cooking and baking, hiking through forests / mountains, or chilling with my kids on the beach - we love the north coast of Ireland and spend a lot of time there. I also could not live without music and I play the saxophone

What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs?

Be brave and trust your own instincts

Next steps - What are your hopes and dreams for Belfast & NI in the future?

I would love to see smaller, indie businesses continue to flourish - I think art and music are so important for everyone, and hopefully, seeing the impact and importance they have played this past year and a half, in keeping everyone sane during multiple lockdowns, the public in NI will continue to support their small businesses over the multi-national corporations.
